Capt. Dave's Ocean Report
As

We’ve been seeing lots of common dolphin
on our trips lately, along with offshore bottlenose, although
we did
have a few unfortunate trips where we could
not find a single dolphin.
We
have not seen any blue whales for quite a while but we had one humpback
sighting. The humpback was spotted by
our crew off
Dana Point while I was away for ten days speaking aboard a cruise
ship – someone had to do it, and after all they gave us a
free cruise for our whole family and all I had to do was three
fifty minute talks - heck that’s just as long as a Dolphin
Safari. Did anyone miss the column, I haven’t done it for
a month, if so, please let me know I could use the encouragement.
Email me here and let me know!
We
saw something in the water about three feet long recently that
looked like a snake. Tom thought
it was a
piece of kelp but I had
him go over near it and it actually stuck its head out of the water
and swam over to us. Most of the passengers agreed it was a snake
since it appeared to be surfacing to breathe. I explained to them
that we don’t have any sea snakes off California and all
sea snakes are venomous so this was most interesting. It kept coming
over near us and as I photographed it I noticed it had a big fish
like eye. I called my friend Mike Bursk on the sea explorer and
asked if he ever saw anything like it – No he hadn’t,
so he used our description and looked up our sighting in one of
their fish books and narrowed it down to two likely suspects both
of them eels. When I got home I made a positive I.D. - a snipe
eel. Usually found in deep water and rarely seen on surface.
We
also had an unusual sighting on our boat see photo. No that ghoulish
figure was not some late
trick or treater
and no it was
not the real Marilyn Manson rock star but an English impersonator
from a big comedy show on Channel 4 in England who went out on
a dolphin Safari recently trip. The Christmas show will feature
people like supermodel Rachel Hunter and Brigit Nielson interacting
with the impersonator as he impersonates the likes of Sylvester
Stallone etc., but all we got was Marylin Manson acting like an
English gentleman and wanting to buy a dolphin, they said I was
the celebrity, what a laugh! Marilyn was a bit annoying, as he
kept calling me Mildred and got a bit vulgar with some juvenile
humor regarding the sex lives and bathroom habits of dolphins,
(that caused me to walk away a few times), but other than that
he was actually quite funny at times with a quick wit as he bounced
back off what I was saying quite a bit. They promised to send me
a copy of the whole show. You know, we have been featured on the
Travel channel, the Fine Living Channel, we’ve taken out
Imax filmmakers, appeared on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, HD news and others,
we’ve even done prime time reality shows like For Love or
Money, but this was definitely a low spot. Oh well, maybe it will
look better with the super models in it.
Well
guys it’s good to be
back after some time off, hope you feel the same.
That’s
it till next week. God bless. Capt. Dave, over and out.
